WASABI: White-label shop for digital intelligent assistance and human-AI collaboration in manufacturing

Project founded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe financing program
2023-2027

The WASABI vision is that digital assistance and conversational AI become standard practices to reach sustainability goals in manufacturing. Humans will use it, for instance, to identify and assess opportunities to turn waste into a resource, and to reorganize work to minimize carbon footprints. Access to these benefits will be as simple as selecting and configuring Apps from an online store and interoperability minimizes vendor-lock-in and maximizes information valorization. New AI-focused training services for employees will be a general practice too. They let workers experience solutions and teach them about the capabilities, risks, and limitations of AI in manufacturing. Digital assistance solutions will blend into Europe’s emerging legal framework for AI and they will be affordable and manageable even by small producers.

HybridAI: a hybrid approach to Natural Language Understanding

Project founded by ExpertAI
2022-2024

The objective of the project is to study neuro-symbolic techniques, here called HybridAI, aiming to improve the state-of-the-art in the field of Natural Language Understanding and Knowledge Graph (KG) Enrichment. Hybrid Machine Learning refers to a learning process where, in the training phase, we exploit symbolic representations (e.g., concepts, relationships) and NLU rules that are not part of the immediate perceptual level (i.e., the sequence of characters and words) of the input documents but are represented in Knowledge Graphs. The project focuses on different Graph Enrichment tasks such as KG expansion with neologisms and KG link prediction from corpora of documents.

Work Datafication and Behavioral Visibility in The Digital Workplace

2022-2023

The research, conducted in collaboration with engineers and business economists, aims to explore new analytical potentials in the data flows generated by employees on Enterprise Collaboration Software (ECS) for the innovation of HRM (Human Resource Management). The research aims to delve into the digital exhausts, search for data representations of employees’ attitudes (quantitative research methods) and understand their performative character by investigating how aggregate quantification feedbacks on employees’ perception and work behaviors (qualitative research methods).

Assessment of well-being state in Post-acute COVID Syndrome: an international multicentre prospective cohort study

Project founded by Gilead Sciences, Inc.
2022-2023

The project concerns with the Post-acute COVID syndrome (PACS), a syndrome which still requires a detailed characterization and identification of clinically meaningful endpoints. The study involves a population of PACS patients coming from three clinics in Modena, Tel Aviv, and Padova for which EHRs, clinical visits, and wearable AX3 data are available. The main project hypotheses are: 1) PACS can be addressed using innovative geriatric outcomes related to the notion of Intrinsic Capacity, 2) ML offers a game-changer in health data analytics and a unique opportunity for ‘P4 medicine’. To this end, the project goal is twofold: 1) To characterize PACS phenotypes. This will be achieved through Clustering Analysis using persistent signs, symptoms, and onset of the new disease conditions, 2) To generate a data-driven Intrinsic capacity Index representing a summary wellness state, negatively associated with frailty phenotype and positively associated with HRQoL and resilience.

Machine Learning to Operationalize WG definition and Generate a Personalized Phenotypic Characterization in PLWHIV

Project founded by Gilead Sciences, Inc.
2021

Lipodystrophy in people living with HIV (PLWHIV) is a syndrome characterized by a constellation of lipid metabolism disorders, insulin resistance, and fat redistribution. Even though lipodystrophy has been observed for the first time two decades ago, several important questions remain unexplored. The main aim of this project is to address some of such topical questions by adopting a Machine Learning approach. Specifically, the project aims are as follows: Aim 1: To determine the relative effects of weight gain/ loss over time, which we call “weight deltas (WD)”; Aim 2: To formulate plausible causal models that may explain WD for patients with different characteristics; Aim 3: To use the WD definition to predict retrospectively clinically meaningful event including new onset of Diabetes, NAFLD, Multimorbidity, Frailty, Disability and Death.

FIRST: virtual Factories Interoperation suppoRting buSiness innovation

EU Horizon 2020 Marie Marie Skłodowska-Curie RISE program
2017-2022

The manufacturing industry is entering a new era in which new ICT technologies and collaboration applications are integrated with traditional manufacturing practices and processes to increase flexibility in manufacturing, mass customization, increase speed, better quality and to improve productivity. Virtual factory models need to be created before the real factory is implemented to better explore different design options, evaluate their performance, and virtual commission the automation systems thus saving time-to-production. The project “vF Interoperation suppoRting buSiness innovaTion” (FIRST) provides new technology and methodologies to describe manufacturing assets; to compose and integrate existing services into collaborative virtual manufacturing processes; and to deal with the evolution of changes.

CLASS: Coordinating Edge And Cloud For Big Data Analytics

European H2020 Funded Project
2018-2020

The project aims to develop a new software architecture framework to help big data developers efficiently distribute data analytics workloads along the compute continuum (from edge to cloud) in a comprehensive and transparent way, providing at the same time real-time guarantees.

Framing Employee Attitudes and Digital Work Behaviors to Support Data-Driven Human Resource Management

Interdisciplinary Fondo Ateneo per la Ricerca (FAR) Project
2018-2020

As processes and organizations become increasingly digitalized, work behaviors produce an asset of digital traces that provides unprecedented information to HRM. While traditional surveys are expensive and “picture-like”, digital data flows are cheap and provide “movie-like” representations. This project aims at exploring the potential of data flows generated by employees on companies’ digital platforms for the innovation of people management towards analytics-based HRM.

SocialGQ: Techniques for the semantic, approximate and user-aware querying of social-graph data

Fondo Ateneo per la Ricerca (FAR) Project
2016-2018

The research concerns the creation of an innovative solution for the effective and efficient querying of social graph data, overcoming the limits of the current research tools available in state of the art and jointly exploiting the user-aware, textual and semantic components of the data.

AMBIT

Fondazione CRM co-funded Project
2014-2016

The AMBIT (Algorithms and Models for Building context-dependent Information delivery Tools) project aims to study and develop a prototype software architecture for the development of context-dependent applications and systems, i.e., tools that provide users with services that are customized according to the context in which they operate. The project also has important application outcomes, both for the operational partners and for the companies and organizations in the area. From this point of view, some application areas appear to be particularly suitable for the adoption of such a notion of context: among these, online advertising, interactive applications for the development of the Modena area, smart help-desk systems.
